1. Ask your parent or guardian for a recent electric power bill.
2. (10 points) Write a piecewise linear equation that represents your monthly electric energy cost
as a function of Kilowatt Hour (KWH) of electricity used. Be sure to include all taxes, fees,
and surcharges.
3. (10 points) Graph this piecewise linear function and mark your current energy usage.
4. (10 points) Identify the sources of at least 50% of your electric power usage and create a pie
chart showing the percentage usage by major function (heating/cooling, refrigeration, cooking,
lighting, hot water, etc.).
5. (10 points) Write a paragraph describing what you learned and what steps you would take if
you wanted or needed to reduce your electric cost by 10% per month.
6. (10 points) Summarize your work in a one-page typewritten report like the one shown on the
following page (your graphs, charts, and tables may be hand-drawn if you prefer).
Note: Do not exceed one side of one page of paper. Extra credit points given for excellent work.
